Sampa is a top tier BJJ academy. The inside is huge with plenty of room, the staff is always friendly and informative, the students have a reciprocating desire to learn and get better, and the instructors are passionate and patient to teach and excited to see you succeed. Professor Nathan Basseto is incredible and I highly recommend him

If you are looking for a BJJ academy that stays true to the art of BJJ, this place is it. Sampa is owned by a globally recognized 4th degree black belt named Professor Renato Migliaccio. Prof. Renato strives to provide high quality BJJ classes and it shows through his continued practice to maintain training in BJJ and other mixed martial arts. Prof. Renato has the ability to recognize the interests and athletic needs of the community he serves. I highly recommend this academy for children as young as 3 up to adults. If you come to Sampa you will be warmly welcomed to the Sampa family.

Hands down the best choice I ever made for my son. He’s learned discipline, has more confidence, and can defend himself.
Clean facility, amazing staff, and Prof. Renato is very involved with his students.

Women In BJJ

One of the biggest myths about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is that it is only for young, fit, men. It’s not hard to see why people have this misconception! Just watching a BJJ class can be very intimidating because there can be so much intensity, aggressive movements, and bodily contact. However, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the best martial arts for women to train in for a number of reasons.

First, BJJ really helps people to understand their bodies and how they work. In many other sports, there is a very imbalanced playing field between men and women, with men having a size and strength advantage. However, in BJJ, it is the technique and strategy that really pushes practitioners to the top. It’s inspiring to know how much power you hold in your bare hands if given the right knowledge and training. For example, if a rear naked choke is applied correctly, it only takes a few pounds of pressure, something almost anyone can do, to render someone unconscious within 5-10 seconds!

Second, BJJ really helps people become comfortable in uncomfortable positions. BJJ is a very full contact sport, but most real life dangerous situations are also full contact. The sooner you can get comfortable being pinned by someone and knowing how to get out, the better off you will be if you ever need to defend yourself. Often, we hear of people freezing in moments of danger. By practicing BJJ, students learn how to think past their panic, how to conserve their energy, and how to time their defenses and attacks in order to escape.

Finally, BJJ destroys the notion that you have to look or be a certain size, strength, or have a certain style to be effective. There are so many different styles of BJJ and each has its own deadly effectiveness. While one student may be able to rely on brute strength, another student can counter that with her extreme flexibility and quick thinking. One student may favor chokes, while another will focus on attacking the legs. There are endless possibilities of how you can modify your training to your style, but when practicing BJJ, you will be faced with all different types of styles, and none are “wrong.” BJJ celebrates diversity in a way that many other sports cannot.
